Remington 887 Sporter Side-Lever PCP Air Rifle
The Remington 887 Sporter is a budget PCP air rifle from Remington's firearm-inspired range. It takes its styling cues from the Remington 887 shotgun, but this is not a mechanically accurate replica. Think of it in much the same way as other firearm-inspired air rifles such as the Diana Mauser K98: familiar styling, but an entirely different airgun platform underneath.
And there is a slightly interesting story behind this one.
The 887 is actually based on the JTS AirStryke, a JTS design that has not yet become widely available in the UK. The Remington version therefore uses JTS Airacuda magazines, rather than a Remington-specific magazine system. It also brings the AirStryke design into .177 calibre, which makes this version particularly interesting for the UK market where .177 is a very popular choice for general-purpose and target shooting.
A Budget PCP With the Basics Covered
The 887 sits below the Remington T-Rex in both specification and price. That does mean some compromises, but they are fairly sensible ones.
You get a regulated PCP action, a 200 bar fill pressure and a 200cc air cylinder providing approximately 90 shots per fill. The side-lever action is straightforward to operate and feeds from a self-indexing multi-shot magazine.
Unlike the T-Rex, the side lever on the 887 is not reversible for left-handed operation, so this is worth considering if you shoot left-handed.
The rifle has a Picatinny optics rail, although there is no additional lower accessory rail. It does, however, have a 1/2" UNF threaded muzzle, allowing a compatible moderator to be fitted.
It also retains fibre-optic iron sights, giving you a basic sighting option without an optic.
Remington Styling
The main reason to buy the 887 over a completely anonymous budget PCP is fairly obvious: it looks like a Remington.
The sporter stock and overall layout are inspired by the Remington 887 shotgun, although the rifle is not intended to be a dimensionally or mechanically accurate replica. The green muzzle cap is part of the price of having it sold as a Remington-branded firearm-inspired air rifle.
If you want a straightforward PCP and couldn't care less what it looks like, there are plenty of other options. If you want something that has the appearance of a real-world firearm while remaining an affordable air rifle, the 887 makes considerably more sense.
