August Staff Picks: Nickel, Nostalgia & Next-Level Engineering

Vector Air "Staff Picks" badge on a black and orange gradient background. White text with laurel wreath border, evokes professionalism.

September is here, and with it comes another round of Staff Picks—our monthly ritual of showcasing the odd mix of airguns, kit, and accessories that have caught our team’s attention.

This month’s line-up is anything but uniform: a special-edition pocket powerhouse, a cult-favourite Czech, a £70 pump-action throwback that surprised us all, and a piece of British engineering so clever it borders on witchcraft. Let’s dive in.

Karl’s Pick – Reximex MITO Nickel Edition

Gletcher NGT F “Nagant” CO2 BB Revolver, a replica of the Nagant 7.62 Tsar killer

The MITO has been with us for a while, but this Nickel Edition is fresh out of the box—and we had a hand in making it happen. After spotting its existence online, a few conversations later, and here it is in the UK. The finish isn’t as orange as a KRAL Marine but carries a triple-sheen depth where highlights sparkle orange and lowlights give off a subtle blue hue. Karl’s vote goes to the walnut pistol over the synthetic carbine, though both are available depending on your taste.

Tee’s Pick – KalibrGun Cricket 2 Smooth

UMAREX Marlin Lever-Action BB Repeater a true classic BB gun

We’re not entirely sure if Tee has chosen this one before, but given the number of people she’s talked into buying it recently, it’s fair to say it’s become her unofficial signature. The Smooth has that KalibrGun DNA—solid, accurate, and with the neat magazine holder Tee insists every rifle should have. It won plenty of attention back at the British Shooting Show, and Tee still hasn’t put it down. Accurate, enjoyable, and surprisingly persuasive—just ask the four customers who left with one last week after they came in for something else.

Craig’s Pick – Daisy Powerline

Vector Optics Tauron Gen2 3-18x50 FFP - The best scope for its money? We think so

Initially dismissed as “just another Red Ryder,” the Daisy Powerline proved us wrong. For £70, you get a nearly full-power air rifle with a rifled barrel, capable of firing pellets or BBs (though we strongly recommend pellets to preserve that rifling). Yes, you’ll need ten pumps for max power, but that’s part of the charm. And it even comes with a scope—don’t expect premium glass, but remember: it’s a £70 rifle. For the money, it’s hard to beat the fun-per-pound ratio here.

Luke’s Pick – Hill Quad Sticks (Hydraulic Tracking & Panning Shooting Sticks)

Walther Reign M2 Bullpup Air Rifle - UMAREX's Best Airgun

Leave it to Luke to pick the bit of gear that makes us question whether it’s engineering or sorcery. Designed and made in Sheffield by the same people who revolutionised airgun pumps and compressors, the Hill Quad Sticks are far from ordinary shooting sticks. Fluid-filled, hydraulically controlled, and designed for seamless target tracking, these sticks support both the front and rear of your rifle while allowing smooth panning and rock-solid stability. They’re rugged, lightweight, terrain-ready, and proudly British-made. In short, they’re not just sticks—they’re precision tools for anyone serious about their shooting setup.

Final Thoughts

This month’s selection is all about contrasts: a nickel-plated pocket pistol, a Czech rifle that refuses to leave the spotlight, a nostalgic bargain that surprised us, and a set of sticks redefining what shooting support can be. Whether you’re into tried-and-true, bargain-friendly, or bleeding-edge, August’s picks have you covered.
