Premium 14C28N Stainless Steel
One of the biggest differences between the Polaris and many of Helle's more traditional knives is the use of 14C28N stainless steel.
 
Helle commonly uses steels such as their H3LS triple-laminated stainless steel across many of their traditional knives. Laminated construction offers excellent characteristics for general use, but it is not particularly well suited to repeated use with a ferro rod, where the laminated construction can make generating sparks less effective.
 
For certain premium bushcraft and outdoor models, Helle therefore uses a solid stainless steel such as 14C28N instead.
 
14C28N is a premium stainless steel known for its excellent combination of edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance, especially compared with its more affordable 12C27 cousin. The particularly strong corrosion resistance makes it well suited to a knife that may be carried outdoors in wet conditions, while its ability to take and hold a fine edge gives the Polaris a noticeable step up in performance.
 
The trade-off is that a premium blade steel is not necessarily as forgiving when it comes to sharpening. While 14C28N can be brought back to an excellent edge, getting the best from it requires better sharpening technique and good-quality stones or strops. It is worth treating the blade properly rather than attacking it with whatever sharpening gadget happens to be closest.
