Ask someone what they look for in a riflescope, and you'll usually hear the same answers. Magnification, objective lens size, whether it's First or Second Focal Plane and, if they've spent a bit more money, how good the glass is. They're all sensible things to look at, but there is one part of a scope that arguably has a greater impact on how enjoyable it is to use, yet somehow receives very little attention: the turrets.
Whether you shoot rabbits at sensible ranges, compete in HFT, spend your weekends punching tiny groups on a benchrest range or simply enjoy plinking in the garden, you'll interact with your turrets every time you zero your rifle. Some shooters won't touch them again for months, while others dial elevation between every shot. That's why choosing the right turret system is just as important as choosing the right reticle or magnification range.
Unfortunately, manufacturers don't always make things easy. Budget scopes can pair MOA turrets with MRAD reticles; premium scopes add locking mechanisms; some feature Zero Stop technology, and others combine several systems into one. The result is a wall of marketing jargon that makes choosing the right optic far harder than it needs to be.
So let's strip away the buzzwords and look at what each turret style actually does, who it's designed for and whether it's worth spending the extra money.

Note: Zero Stop systems often require partial turret disassembly to set correctly. Once adjusted, they're extremely useful, but they're generally less intuitive than standard or tactical turrets.

Capped Turrets
Simple and Affordable
If you've ever bought an entry-level riflescope, chances are you've already used a capped turret without even thinking about it.
Mechanically, they're actually quite simple. Underneath the protective cap sits what is effectively a standard adjustment turret. Once you've zeroed your rifle, the cap screws back on, protecting the adjustment mechanism from dirt, rain and accidental knocks. For many shooters that's exactly what they want. Zero the rifle, replace the caps and never think about the turrets again.
Because capped turrets dominate the budget end of the market, they've unfairly earned a reputation for being "cheap". In reality, the turret design itself isn't the issue. Some extremely capable hunting scopes still use capped turrets because they suit the intended purpose perfectly. A hunter stalking through woodland has very little interest in accidentally catching an exposed turret on a gate, rucksack or jacket. Keeping everything protected simply makes sense.
Where problems do begin to appear is in the specifications surrounding many budget scopes. Manufacturers looking to shave a few pounds from production costs will often mix turret and reticle measurement systems. It's surprisingly common to find scopes with MOA adjustment turrets paired with an MRAD (Mil-Dot) reticle.
Can you still use them? Absolutely. Does it make any sense? Not really.
Imagine trying to measure your kitchen in millimetres whilst your tape measure only reads inches. You'll eventually get there, but you'll spend more time converting numbers than actually getting on with the job. The same applies to your scope. If your reticle is measured in MRAD, your turrets should ideally adjust in MRAD. Likewise, if your reticle uses MOA, the turrets should also use MOA. Mixing the two simply adds unnecessary maths every time you need to make a correction.
For shooters who only ever zero once and rely on holdover using the reticle, this may never become an issue. However, as soon as you begin using your turrets regularly, matching adjustment systems becomes increasingly important. It's one of those specifications that often gets overlooked when chasing the cheapest price, yet makes a noticeable difference every time you shoot.

Standard (Exposed) Turrets
The Original Turret Design That Never Really Went Away
Before protective caps became commonplace, virtually every riflescope used exposed adjustment turrets. There was no clever locking mechanism, no screw-on covers and certainly no marketing department inventing names for them. They simply did the job they were designed to do.
Ironically, after years of manufacturers pushing capped turrets onto budget optics, we're now seeing exposed standard turrets making a bit of a comeback. Better sealing technology means weather resistance is no longer the concern it once was, whilst improvements in machining have resulted in far more precise clicks and smoother adjustment than many shooters remember from older scopes.
For many people, standard turrets offer the perfect middle ground. They provide quick access to adjustments without adding the complexity or cost of locking systems. If you occasionally dial for different distances but don't necessarily need your turrets locked down every time you put the rifle back in its case, they make a great deal of sense.
Benchrest shooters, range users and those who regularly fine-tune their zero often appreciate just how straightforward exposed turrets are. There's nothing to unlock, nothing to remove and no additional mechanisms to think about. Simply reach up, dial the required adjustment and carry on shooting.
Of course, that convenience comes with a compromise. Because the turrets are permanently exposed, they're also more susceptible to being knocked during transport. Throw a rifle into the back of a vehicle, drag it through thick undergrowth or repeatedly slide it in and out of a soft case and there's always the possibility that an exposed turret may rotate slightly without you noticing. Whether that actually happens depends largely on the quality of the turret itself, but it's one of the reasons tactical locking systems have become increasingly popular over the last decade.
That said, for shooters who spend most of their time on the range or who simply appreciate mechanical simplicity, standard turrets remain one of the best-balanced options available.

Tactical Turrets: The Gold Standard for Most Shooters
If standard turrets are the traditional option, tactical turrets are where modern scope design really starts to shine. Designed for shooters who regularly dial corrections, tactical turrets combine the convenience of exposed adjustment with mechanisms that prevent accidental movement. Depending on the manufacturer, these may lock by pushing and pulling the turret, lifting and twisting, or through a dedicated locking collar, but the goal is always the same: only move when you want them to.
This is why you'll find tactical turrets on many modern hunting scopes, competition optics and premium sporting scopes. They allow quick corrections when needed, but once locked, they're far less likely to lose zero while being carried through woodland, bouncing around in a vehicle or spending half the day being thrown in and out of a rifle slip.
Unlike capped turrets, tactical turrets are designed to be used. If you're regularly changing distance, compensating for wind or simply enjoy shooting at multiple ranges, they make life considerably easier. They do, however, come at a cost. The additional locking mechanisms, machining and tighter tolerances make them noticeably more expensive than standard or capped designs.

For many shooters this is the sweet spot. You get the flexibility of exposed turrets without constantly wondering whether your rifle has knocked half a mil off zero while being dragged through a hedge.

Zero Stop: A Feature Rather Than a Turret Type

Zero Stop is often spoken about as if it's its own style of turret, but in reality it's a feature that's added to other turret systems. You'll most commonly find it on standard or tactical elevation turrets, while the windage turret usually remains a normal tactical locking design.
The idea is brilliantly simple. Once you've zeroed your rifle, you fit a mechanical stop underneath the elevation turret. From that point onwards you can dial upwards for longer distances as much as you like, but when you return the turret back down it physically stops at your chosen zero. No counting clicks. No wondering if you've gone one rotation too far. Just wind it back until it stops and you're home.
For shooters regularly moving between 25, 50, 75 and 100 metres this is genuinely one of the most useful developments in modern optics. It's especially popular with FT, HFT, PRS and long-range centre-fire shooters who constantly dial elevation throughout the day.
There is, however, one catch that catches people out.
Every scope has a finite amount of internal elevation adjustment. If your rifle naturally shoots high because of the rail angle, scope mount height or barrel alignment, the Zero Stop can actually prevent you dialling down far enough to achieve your chosen zero.
This is particularly common on rifles fitted with positive cant rails, such as the factory fitted 30 MOA Picatinny rail found on the new FX DRS Mk2. That rail intentionally angles the scope downwards for long-range shooting, giving more upward adjustment later on. Brilliant at 100 metres. Less brilliant if you're trying to zero at 10 or 15 metres.
Usually the solution is simple. Adjust the Zero Stop, temporarily remove it while zeroing or if you're wanting to zero even closer you may need to remove it altogether. It's not a fault with the scope. It's just geometry. The relationship between the barrel, rail, mounts and scope determines where your usable adjustment ends up.
This is also why we regularly see customers blame a scope for "not having enough adjustment" when the scope isn't actually the problem. Changing to adjustable mounts or choosing a different rail often solves the issue immediately.
Ironically, some of the most expensive scopes on the market receive the most complaints about running out of adjustment, not because they're worse, but because they're the ones most likely to include Zero Stop.

Which Turret is Right for You?
Like most things in shooting, there isn't a universally "best" option. The best turret is simply the one that suits how you actually shoot, not how you imagine you'll shoot after watching one too many PRS videos on YouTube.
If your rifle spends most of its life zeroed at one distance, and you're unlikely to touch the turrets again until next year's MOT, capped turrets still make perfect sense. They're inexpensive, protected from the elements, and once you've got the rifle shooting where you want it, they'll happily sit there for years. Provided you have a reticle that holds up to your gun's recoil if you're using it on a springer or powder-burner
If you're the sort of shooter who occasionally dials elevation, perhaps stretching an air rifle from 25 metres out to 60 or 80 metres, standard exposed turrets are a fantastic middle ground. They're simple, robust and quicker to use without the additional cost of locking systems.
For hunters, HFT shooters and anyone carrying a rifle over rough ground, tactical turrets are probably the sweet spot. You retain the ability to dial corrections quickly, but the locking mechanism means you're far less likely to discover your elevation has mysteriously wandered off after climbing through a hedge or bouncing around in the back of the truck.
Finally, if you're regularly shooting multiple known distances or competing, Zero Stop starts making a huge amount of sense. Being able to simply wind the turret back until it physically stops removes one more thing to think about when you're under pressure.
The Forgotten Part: Your Scope Isn't Always the Problem

One of the biggest misconceptions we see is customers assuming a scope doesn't have enough elevation or windage adjustment.
Sometimes that's true. Most of the time, it isn't.
The amount of usable adjustment you have isn't determined solely by the scope. It's a combination of the scope, the mounts, the rail and the rifle itself. Think of them as one complete optical system rather than four separate parts.
A scope with 70 MOA of elevation mounted on a rifle with a 30 MOA rail doesn't suddenly gain or lose adjustment. What changes is where that adjustment sits relative to your barrel.
Positive rails (20 MOA, 30 MOA etc.) deliberately tilt the scope downwards. This gives you more upward adjustment for long-range shooting but reduces how much you can dial down for close-range zeroing. Negative Rails do exactly the opposite.
Then you have mount height. Higher mounts alter the relationship between the barrel and optic. Adjustable mounts can completely change the amount of usable adjustment available. Even manufacturing tolerances between receivers, rails and mounts can influence where your scope naturally wants to zero.
This is why experienced shooters will often recommend buying decent mounts before immediately blaming the scope.
A Real World Example
Take the new FX DRS Mk2. It now comes fitted with a factory 30 MOA Picatinny rail, which is fantastic if you're shooting long distances. It effectively gives your scope more upward travel where you actually need it.
However, if you're trying to zero at 10 or 15 metres, particularly with a scope featuring a Zero Stop, you may find yourself running out of downward adjustment.
The immediate reaction is often:
"This scope doesn't have enough elevation."
In reality, the scope is doing exactly what it should.
Usually, the solution is changing the mount geometry, using adjustable mounts, resetting or temporarily removing the Zero Stop, or simply accepting that a 30 MOA rail wasn't really designed for close-range indoor shooting.
It's worth remembering that every component in the mounting system contributes to where your optical zero eventually ends up.

If you're buying your very first scope:
Buy capped turrets, but make absolutely sure the turret adjustments match the reticle. MOA turrets belong with MOA reticles. MRAD turrets belong with MRAD reticles. Mixing the two might save a few pounds initially, but it'll cost you frustration every time you try to calculate corrections.
If you already understand how to dial adjustments:
Go for standard turrets. They're quicker, easier to use and increasingly available at sensible prices.
If you regularly shoot outdoors, carry your rifle or compete:
Choose tactical locking turrets. They're arguably the best balance of speed, security and usability currently available.
If you're constantly changing distances:
Look for Zero Stop. Once you've used it properly, it's surprisingly difficult to go back.

Turret design has quietly become one of the biggest developments in modern optics. Twenty years ago you were largely choosing between cheap caps or exposed knobs. Today, there are locking systems, mechanical zero stops, tool-free resets, push-pull mechanisms and every combination in between.
Ironically, while shooters often spend hours comparing glass quality, magnification and reticles, the turrets are the part of the scope you'll physically interact with every single time you shoot.
Choose the right turret for your style of shooting and you'll probably enjoy the scope more than chasing another 2% of optical light transfer.
And if you do find yourself running out of elevation...
Before writing an angry email blaming the manufacturer, have a look at your rail, your mounts and how everything is fitted together. Nine times out of ten, the scope is simply following the laws of geometry. Unfortunately, geometry remains stubbornly immune to online complaints.
